One of the best ways to get to know our school, administration, teachers, other parents, and students is to experience the Whitaker community as a volunteer! The opportunities to give of your time come in a variety of options – from one-time volunteer roles to weekly commitments – and you can choose what works best for your time and schedule.
What are examples of volunteer roles at Whitaker?
- Event volunteer for annual programs (i.e. Field Day, Fall Fest, class musicals)
- Duty-free lunch volunteer (weekly opportunities to monitor the cafeteria during a specific time frame to give our wonderful teachers a break in their day)
- Classroom volunteer or class parent
- Backpack Program helper
- Media Center helper
- Field Trip chaperone
- Wonderful Wednesdays monthly teacher lunches (bring food items, set-up for lunch, help with clean-up)
- and much more!
How do I sign-up for volunteer opportunities?
First, you must be registered as a volunteer in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools Volunteer Portal. Click “New Volunteer: Click Here to Register” to create an account and complete the volunteer registration process. You can view more information about WSFCS volunteer policies here. Please note that you do have to re-submit your volunteer form each academic year!
Once your volunteer registration has been verified, you can start to give of your time as a volunteer! By simply clicking here to access our Whitaker Volunteer Sign-Up – LOME, you can view all of the upcoming events, sign-up to contribute items needed for each event, and sign-up to volunteer. We update it regularly!
How do I check-in when I arrive at Whitaker to volunteer?
When you show up to our school as a volunteer, you’ll want to ring the doorbell at the front entrance of the school. Share your name and reason for being there (“Hi, I’m John Smith here to help with duty-free lunch!”). The door will be unlocked and you can proceed to the front office. Be sure to have your driver’s license ID with you!
You will use the computer in the front office to check-in, select “Volunteer” as your reason for being at the school, and scan the back side of your ID. A volunteer name tag will print out and you can stick the name tag on your shirt. From there, you can proceed to your volunteer location!
Don’t forget: You need to sign-out in the front office once your volunteer gig has been completed. Simply click “Check out” on the computer and scan the barcode on your volunteer name tag and toss your name tag into the trash bin.
